Dr. Fisher is a clinical psychologist, teaches classes in diabetes research and clinical care and trains diabetes clinicians in helping adults with diabetes and their families manage the behavioral and emotional aspects of disease management over time. He sees adults with diabetes at the UCSF Diabetes Teaching Center.

 

Dr. Fisher is a professor emeritus at UCSF and Director of the Behavioral Diabetes Research Group. He has been the Principal Investigator of numerous NIH-supported clinical trials and longitudinal research studies that address the emotional and behavioral factors that affect living with diabetes and affect how diabetes is managed. He has developed interventions to reduce the distress that often accompanies diabetes management and has created standardized instruments to assess these issues for use in clinical care. His major interests focus on integrating the personal experience of diabetes and its management into the comprehensive treatment of diabetes and to understanding how personal beliefs, expectations, worries and concerns affect diabetes management and quality if life.

 

Dr. Fisher received his undergraduate degree from Penn State University, his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Cincinnati and his fellowship training at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He is a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology.
